Walk (run) for a world without colon cancer

My first time participating in the Colon Cancer Prevention Project's Walk Away from Colon Cancer & 5K Run was in August 2010. The annual walk came just three months after my dad passed away from colon cancer at age 57. My family needed a way to honor and remember him, and to do something to help others in his name.

This was the perfect cause.

That first year, we formed Team Don't Pass Me By, a team we named after a Beatles song because my dad was such a fan. That year, around 20 of us walked and ran together to remember my dad and several others we knew who had been impacted by colon cancer.

Last year, in 2011, the team returned. Around 35 of our friends and family came out. It was amazing to see so much support.

Now in 2012, I'm excited to say that my team is one of 15 already signed up for the 5K. Friends and family are forming teams to celebrate life, honor loved ones, and fight for a cause we all feel passionate about. You can visit our 5K page on this site and click on the team pages listed on the bottom left to read some of these stories on the customized team pages.

It's an honor to have so many teams in this 5K, which raises money for our efforts to end preventable colon cancer.

We can't wait to see everyone at the 7th Annual Walk/Run. Join us and Honorary Chair University of Louisville President James Ramsey for a wonderful day, Aug. 25 at 9 a.m.

Don't Pass Me By will be there. Come join us!
